Understanding The Functionality Of Boat Levelers

how boat leveler works

Insta-Trim is a hydraulic boat leveller that improves the ride of a boat every time it leaves the dock. It is easy to install and comes in lengths to fit most boats, with custom sizes also available. The boat leveller works by installing two stainless steel planes on the transom. As the hydraulic cylinders deflect the trim tabs, the water flow is redirected, creating upward pressure under the trim tabs and raising the stern. The boat leveller also has a trim tab rocker switch that, when pressed, sends an electrical current to the hydraulic motor pump unit, creating fluid pressure. This fluid is then channelled to the actuators, which raise or lower the trim tabs.

How water flow is redirected

Insta-Trim Boat Levelers are hydraulic levelers that improve the ride of a boat. They are easy to install and come in various sizes to fit most boats. The water flow is redirected using a pump and trim tabs. The pump circulates fluid so that it does not stall, and the trim tabs are located at the back of the boat, below the waterline. These tabs adjust to changing conditions and provide lift to give the boat the best possible running attitude. The trim tabs come in different sizes, ranging from 10-12 inches to over 60 inches in depth.

The Insta-Trim Boat Leveler system includes several components that work together to redirect water flow and level the boat. The first component is the trim tab actuator or cylinder, which is the main mechanism that adjusts the trim tabs. It comes with an 8-foot hydraulic hose and can be mounted using a cylinder mounting bracket. The trim tab assemblies are available for single or twin outboards and inboard engines, with chord depths ranging from 8 to 11 inches.

The system also includes a universal motor pump with adjustable pressure relief, which ensures that the fluid circulates and prevents the pump from stalling. The pump comes with oil and hose fittings, and the hydraulic hose is designed with nylon-reinforced webbing and a protective PVC coating, rated at 2000 lb. burst pressure.

In addition to the actuator and pump, the Insta-Trim Boat Leveler also features electronic tab locators that show the position of the tabs using diode lamps. The system uses a 12-volt solenoid valve, available with either white or green wires, which is custom-designed for the Insta-Trim Boat Leveler and epoxy-sealed for humidity protection.

By using the pump to circulate hydraulic fluid and adjusting the trim tabs at the back of the boat, the Insta-Trim Boat Leveler system redirects water flow to provide a smoother and more comfortable ride for boating enthusiasts.

How to install boat levelers

To install a boat leveler, follow these steps:

Firstly, bring the tabs to the full up position and unscrew the hose trim from the transom of the boat. Drill a 13mm hole for the hydraulic hose and sensor cable. Loosen the bottom large nut at the base of the cylinder and unscrew the bolts fixing the cylinder bracket to the tab. Unscrew the large nut at the base of the cylinder and pull out the ram.

Next, attach the small (red) inside sensor to the top of the ram, ensuring the mark "A" is in line with the seam. Drill a hole of at least 13mm depth into the ram and fasten the sensor with the brass screw.

Use a file to mark the lower part of the ram, marked as "B", ensuring this is on the same side as "A". Reinstall the ram, ensuring mark "B" is facing up. Repeat this process for the other side of the boat.

Snap the outside sensor onto the cylinder, with the cable resting on top. Ensure the sensor's centerline is in line with the hose and mark "B" on the ram. Run the cable through the same hole as the hose, drilling more if necessary. Reinstall the hose trim, leaving an ample loop of cable for the cylinder's full movement.

Locate a convenient position for the instrument and cut out a 64mm diameter hole. Attach the instrument and tighten with its brace, being careful not to over-tighten. Connect the red wire to 12 or 24 volts via the ignition switch, and the black wire to the negative. Connect the wire from the sensor into the instrument.

Finally, attach the wires from the outside sensors to the Y-connector, fitting it to the boat hull or transom with the provided screws.

Benefits of a level ride

A level boat ride is not only enjoyable but also offers several health and wellness benefits. Here are some advantages of a level ride:

Enhanced boating experience:

A level boat ride improves your overall boating experience by ensuring a smoother and more comfortable journey. It helps you explore life at sea, enjoy a sense of freedom, and engage in new hobbies and interests related to marine life and water activities.

Improved physical and mental health:

Boating is an excellent way to stay active and improve your physical, emotional, and mental health. It boosts your endurance, flexibility, and strength while providing a fun and enjoyable form of exercise. The sound of water has been found to increase blood flow to the brain and promote relaxation, contributing to stress relief.

Social benefits:

Boating offers opportunities for quality time with friends and family, fostering social connections that are essential for a healthier appetite, lower tension levels, improved empathy, and better behavior and teamwork. Creating shared memories and deepening bonds with loved ones during boat rides can positively impact your overall happiness and well-being.

Ease of control:

A level boat is easier to control and maneuver, making it safer and more enjoyable for both experienced and novice boaters. It allows for better handling, smoother turns, and a more stable ride, reducing the risk of accidents and providing a more relaxed boating experience.

Reduced maintenance:

Leveling a boat can also reduce maintenance requirements. By keeping the boat level, you can minimize potential wear and tear on certain components. This helps to maintain the boat's appearance and functionality over time, reducing the need for repairs and replacements.

The trim tab rocker switch

The rocker switch is available in both flat and bat handle styles, offering an "instant stop" function to prevent actuator over-run. It is a self-contained switch, requiring no additional control box, and can be installed in single or dual station applications. The gasket-sealed switch prevents water entry, meeting the mil-std 202F standard for salt spray resistance.

Upgrades are available in the form of LED tab position indicators, providing a visual representation of the trim tab's position. The switch is designed to last in the harsh marine environment, with genuine Carling switches known for their high quality and durability.

When it comes to wiring, the trim tab rocker switch typically has three terminals at the back, with specific connections for 12V input and output. It is important to note that you will likely need two rocker switches, one for each trim tab, to ensure effective control.

Overall, the trim tab rocker switch is a crucial component for levelling a boat and ensuring a smooth ride. Its design, functionality, and durability make it a reliable tool for boat operators.
