What You'll Learn

Spectrum Sports' availability in New York
Spectrum Sports was a network of regional sports cable television stations serving much of the upstate New York area. The stations were available in Rochester, Binghamton, Syracuse, and Buffalo. The network was formed in 2003 as budget cuts at the now-defunct Empire Sports Network, the area's previous regional sports network, forced severe cutbacks in sports coverage outside of Buffalo.
Spectrum Sports aired a wide variety of local sports programming, including high school sports, college sports, and minor league sports games. To suit local interests and because of rights issues, some events were only carried on specific feeds. For example, viewers in Binghamton, Utica, and North Country received the Syracuse (Central New York) feed. In addition to local sports, Spectrum Sports was also affiliated with ESPNEWS, which was usually carried during the midday period.
Spectrum Sports was owned and operated by Charter Communications through its acquisition of Time Warner Cable in May 2016. The Buffalo and Rochester stations were rebranded as Time Warner Cable SportsChannel in the fall of 2012, and all three stations were rebranded as "Spectrum Sports" in September 2016.
Spectrum Sports was not available on satellite television or in areas of upstate New York served by companies other than Charter Spectrum/Time Warner Cable.

Basketball tournaments aired by Spectrum Sports
Spectrum Sports Academy hosts basketball tournaments for boys and girls from 3rd to 12th grade. The academy also offers divisions for boys and girls combined from 7th to 12th grade. The tournaments are held at the Spectrum arena, which is known for hosting various basketball tournaments, including Big Five games and several Atlantic 10 Conference tournaments. The arena was also the site of the famous last-second shot by Christian Laettner of Duke to beat Kentucky in the 1992 NCAA East Regional.
In addition to the tournaments hosted by Spectrum Sports Academy, Spectrum is also the official television partner of the OHSAA and televises all boys' and girls' basketball semifinal and championship games from the University of Dayton Arena. These games are available to viewers on Spectrum News 1, the Spectrum app, and OHSAA.tv. Some games also air on channel 314.
The Spectrum arena, located in Philadelphia, was the city's first modern indoor sports arena. It was built to accommodate the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL and the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA. The arena had a seating capacity of 18,168 for basketball and was in use until 2009, with the final event being a Pearl Jam concert. The Spectrum was demolished between November 2010 and May 2011.
The Spectrum holds the record for the fastest conversion from hockey to basketball. It was also one of the first sports arenas to have a scoreboard with a message board, with the first dot matrix screens in professional hockey and basketball, capable of displaying photos, animations, replays, and messages.

Collegiate sports aired by Spectrum Sports
Spectrum Sports, also known as Spectrum Networks or Charter Sports Regional Networks, is a group of regional sports networks in the United States. These networks primarily broadcast regional sporting events from various professional, collegiate, and high school sports teams. The channels were originally branded as Time Warner Cable Sports Channel or Time Warner Cable SportsNet, but were rebranded as Spectrum Sports after being acquired by Charter Communications in 2016.
Spectrum Sports has a presence in several states, including Ohio, Kansas, Florida, New York, and California. In Ohio, Spectrum Sports aired college football and basketball games from several universities, including The State University of New York, the University of Akron, and Bowling Green State University. The network also covered the Ohio High School Athletic Association, televising all boys' and girls' basketball semifinal and championship games. In Kansas, the network's programming consisted mostly of college and high school games.
Spectrum Sports allows viewers to customize their sports packages to watch their favorite teams year-round. The networks also feature regional and national sports discussion, documentary, and analysis programs. For example, Spectrum Sports in Ohio aired "Before The League," a documentary series on the history of professional American football in the state.
In terms of partnerships with collegiate athletic programs, Time Warner Cable has formed several regional sports networks. The first of these was SportsNet New York in 2006, in partnership with the New York Mets. This was followed by Time Warner Cable SportsNet (now Spectrum SportsNet), formed in conjunction with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2012.

Spectrum Sports' acquisition of Time Warner Cable
Spectrum Sports, a network of regional sports cable television stations, served a large portion of the upstate New York area. The stations were owned and operated by Charter Communications, which acquired Time Warner Cable in May 2016. The network offered a variety of local college and minor league sports games, including basketball tournaments, and was the de facto successor to the Buffalo-based Empire Sports Network.
Spectrum Sports' history can be traced back to 2003 when budget cuts at the Empire Sports Network, the previous regional sports network, forced severe cutbacks in its ability to cover sports outside of Buffalo. In 2006, Time Warner SportsNet (TWSN) was established in Rochester by Time Warner Cable, acquiring the rights to teams such as the Americans (ice hockey), Knighthawks (indoor lacrosse), and Rattlers (outdoor lacrosse). Over the years, TWSN expanded its reach and acquired the rights to additional teams, including the Rochester Razorsharks basketball team.
In 2009, Time Warner Cable became an entirely independent company, continuing to use the Time Warner name under license. In 2012, the Buffalo and Rochester stations were rebranded as Time Warner Cable SportsChannel, adopting a logo similar to Time Warner Cable SportsNet in Los Angeles. In 2013, Time Warner Cable reached a 25-year, $8.35 billion deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a new regional sports network, resulting in the launch of Spectrum SportsNet LA in 2014.
In May 2015, Charter Communications announced its acquisition of Time Warner Cable for $78.7 billion, with the purchase completing in May 2016. Following the acquisition, the stations were rebranded as Spectrum Sports in September 2016. Spectrum Sports ceased operations in October 2017, merging its existing programming into Spectrum News and online platforms.
While I cannot confirm if Spectrum will air the NY state basketball tournament, Spectrum Sports previously aired a variety of basketball content, including high school, college, and professional games.

Spectrum Sports' coverage of New York Knicks basketball
Spectrum Sports was a network of regional sports cable television stations serving much of the upstate New York area. The network, owned and operated by Charter Communications, was formed in 2003 and broadcast a variety of local college and minor league sports games. Spectrum Sports aired a wide variety of local sports programming, including some basketball games.
In June 2006, Time Warner SportsNet (TWSN) was established by acquiring rights to teams owned by the Rochester Sports Group. TWSN obtained the rights to televise the games of the Rochester Red Wings baseball team and the Rochester Razorsharks basketball team. Replays of the Rochester Raiders indoor football team and some collegiate sports were also aired. The channel served the entire Greater Rochester area, including the Finger Lakes region and Genesee County (Batavia).
Spectrum Sports was the de facto successor to the Buffalo-based Empire Sports Network. Unlike most regional sports networks, it was never available on satellite television or in areas served by companies other than Charter Spectrum/Time Warner Cable. Existing programming on the network was eventually merged into Spectrum News and migrated to online platforms.
To suit local interests and due to rights issues, some events are only carried on specific feeds, such as the Buffalo, Rochester, and/or Syracuse feeds. Viewers in Binghamton, Utica, and North Country receive the Central New York feed from Syracuse.
