The Coulee Conference is a high school athletic conference for medium-sized schools in west-central Wisconsin. It was founded in 1926, making it one of the oldest athletic conferences in the state. The conference was formed by six small high schools in La Crosse and Trempealeau Counties: Bangor, Galesville, Holmen, Mindoro, Onalaska, and West Salem. The conference was named after the Coulee Region in the southwestern part of Wisconsin's Driftless Area.
Over the years, the membership of the Coulee Conference has changed due to school mergers and realignment. In 1936, Trempealeau joined the conference, and in 1942, Melrose became a member, bringing the total to eight schools. After the Galesville-Ettrick merger in 1949, the conference's roster remained the same until 1965 when Melrose and Mindoro merged, creating the new school Melrose-Mindoro. In 1971, Gale-Ettrick merged with Trempealeau to form the new Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School, which remained in the Coulee Conference. To maintain eight members, Cochrane-Fountain City joined from the Dairyland Conference.
In 1977, the Coulee Conference lost three members: Cochrane-Fountain City and Melrose-Mindoro left for the Dairyland Conference, while Bangor joined the Scenic Central Conference. They were replaced by Black River Falls from the South Central Conference and Royall and Westby from the Scenic Central Conference. However, Royall was opposed to joining the Coulee Conference due to its smaller size, increased travel distances, and the loss of traditional rivalries. After the WIAA's freeze on conference realignment ended in 1979, Royall formed the new Scenic Bluffs Conference with other schools. The Coulee Conference then added its first and only out-of-state member, La Crescent from Minnesota, located across the Mississippi River from La Crosse.
In the late 1980s, Viroqua joined the Coulee Conference, bringing the membership to nine schools. However, Holmen and Onalaska left in 1989 to become charter members of the new Mississippi Valley Conference.
