Drexel University's basketball team, the Drexel Dragons, has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. Beginning in 1894, Drexel played their basketball games and held athletic activities in a gymnasium located on the fourth floor of the Main Building, sometimes referred to as the West Philadelphia College Court.
In 1929, a new gymnasium was constructed with the addition of Curtis Hall, an extension of the Drexel Main Building. This gymnasium, known as Curtis Hall Gym or "The Band Box", featured a full-sized basketball floor and separate locker rooms for home and visiting teams. However, as the popularity of the basketball team grew, Curtis Hall Gym became inadequate for hosting games.
During the 1951-52 season, Drexel started playing some of its league and home games at Sayre Junior High School in West Philadelphia. From the 1953-54 season through the 1968-69 season, Sayre Junior High School served as the primary home court for Drexel.
In the 1969-70 season, Drexel moved its home basketball games to the 32nd Street Armory, also known as the Drexel Armory. However, after the 1974-75 season, the armory was no longer used for home games, and the Daskalakis Athletic Center (DAC) became the new home court starting in the 1975-76 season. The DAC, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, features a multi-purpose arena with over 2,500 seats and is named after former Drexel Lacrosse player John A. Daskalakis. Within the DAC, games are played on Sam Cozen Court, named in honour of Sam Cozen, the winningest coach in Drexel Men's Basketball history.
The DAC has undergone extensive renovations over the years, including upgrades to lighting, scoreboards, audio systems, and seating. Drexel Dragons is the name of the athletic teams that represent Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The men's basketball team currently competes in the Colonial Athletic Association in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Drexel Dragons women's basketball team has also had success, ending Old Dominion University's NCAA record 17-year reign as CAA champion with a 62-41 victory in the 2009 conference semifinals. The team received a number 12 seeding in the 2009 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament, where they lost to Kansas State 68-44. The 2012-2013 Drexel Dragons women's team finished third in the CAA and were invited to the Women's National Invitation Tournament, winning six straight games in the NIT postseason tournament.
