Protecting Your Boat: Atlas Armor Installation Guide

how to put armor on a boat I atlas

In the MMO game Atlas, ships are a vital part of life and survival, used for exploration and combat. Players can choose to build their ships from scratch or purchase a Raft or Ramshackle Schooner from the Shipyardsman in Freeports. Building a ship requires a Shipyard, which must be placed in a land claim and in deep enough water for the ship to be launched. Once the Shipyard is built, players can craft the skeleton of their chosen ship, followed by the component parts such as wood planks and cloth sails. The ship can then be customised with portholes, sails, and internal furnishings such as beds, barrels, and crafting stations. To defend their ships, players can build an Armored Dock, which must be destroyed before the ship can be damaged.

Build a shipyard

To build a shipyard in Atlas, you will need to unlock the Shipwright skill through the Construction and Mercantilism skill tree. This will allow you to build a Small Shipyard, which can be crafted at a Smithy using the following resources: 240 Fiber, 105 Stone, 420 Thatch, and 840 Wood.

Once you have crafted the Small Shipyard, you will need to find a suitable location to place it. Look for a spot along the coast of your island that is deep enough for your ship to enter and exit, but also shallow enough for the foundations of the shipyard to rest on the ground. After you've found the perfect spot, place the Small Shipyard and interact with it to see the recipe of materials needed to build your first ship.

The Small Shipyard allows you to craft small and medium-sized ships, such as the Sloop and Schooner. To build these ships, you will need additional resources, including Fiber, Hide, Metal, Thatch, and Wood. The specific quantities of each resource will depend on the type of ship you want to build.

It is important to note that structures in Atlas have durability ratings that can be damaged, so it is wise to build with the highest durability tier you can manage. Higher-tier buildings can withstand more damage before they are destroyed, and when a structure is destroyed, any other structures supported by it will also be destroyed unless they have alternative support.

In addition to the Small Shipyard, there is also a Basic Shipyard in Atlas, which is used for crafting larger ships such as the Cog, Harrier, and Tramp Freighter. To craft the Basic Shipyard, you will need to unlock both Seamanship and Shipwright Skills.

Build the ship's skeleton

Building the skeleton of your ship is the second step in the ship-building process in Atlas. Before you can craft the skeleton, you must build a shipyard. Once your shipyard is built, you can access its inventory to see what ships are available for crafting.

The blueprint for the ship's skeleton will tell you what resources you need to harvest and how much of each. Place the required resources into the shipyard's inventory and craft the skeleton for your ship.

The basic structure of the ship will appear in the dry dock of the shipyard, ready for you to add decks, planks, and sails. The ship's skeleton or ribbing is laid down first as a structure to attach planks, decks, and sails to.

When initially created, scaffolding will spawn around the ship, allowing access to different areas to place structures. The ship skeleton acts as the basic framework for a ship and can only be created at the Small Shipyard and the Large Shipyard.

Add planks to complete the hull

Once you have the basic structure for your ship, you can start adding planks to complete the hull. With a plank equipped, you will see blue outlines for possible placements along the ribbing of the ship. Place the planks along the ribbing until the hull is complete.

Some planks can be replaced with gunports to allow you to shoot cannons from inside the ship. For example, a Brigantine requires 40 medium wood planks to close the hull, 12 of which can be swapped for wood gunports.

Place planks along the hull of the ship to give it structure. Once you have a completed hull, it's time to add decks and sails.

Place the steering wheel

To place the steering wheel on your boat in Atlas, you'll need to craft it first. The ship's steering wheel is crafted in the smithy using 14 fibers, 18 thatch, and 40 wood. Once crafted, you can place the steering wheel on the deck of your ship. Ensure that you leave some space free around the front of the wheel, otherwise, your view will be limited to the first person, making it difficult to sail effectively. You can place the wheel at the very front of the ship if you like, but be sure that no structures are too close, as this will prevent you from going into the third person when using the wheel.

If you need to replace your ship's steering wheel, you can do so safely by demolishing the original wheel and placing a new one. You don't need to be anchored to replace it, but it's good practice. You won't be able to have two steering wheels on your ship at the same time.

Add internal structures, weapons, and furnishings

Now that you have the basic structure of your ship in place, it's time to add the internal structures, weapons, and furnishings.

Internal Structures

You can add building tiles such as walls and ceilings to create rooms or cabins on the deck of your ship. Be careful not to completely seal off access to the upper decks and outer hull planks. You will also need to be able to access the outer hull planks with a repair hammer to maintain your ship.

Weapons

Weapons such as cannons can be placed on any deck. You can build platforms at the front and rear of your ship to place cannons that face those directions. Some planks can be replaced with gunports to allow you to shoot cannons from within your ship.

Furnishings

There are various furnishings you can add to your ship, including:

  • Beds: Allow you to respawn on your ship if you die. The number of beds that can be placed depends on the size of your ship.
  • Food Larder/Mess Table: Keeps your crew fed.
  • Ship Resources Box: Provides resources for the crew to passively repair your ship. Placing gold coins inside will automatically pay your crew to prevent mutiny.
  • Ammo Box: Allows your NPC crew to stock up on ammunition during battle.
  • Water Barrel: Sailing takes a long time, so it's important to have a source of water to avoid dying of thirst.
  • Bookshelf: Allows you to store blueprints after looting crates at sea.
  • Large Storage Box: Used to store things.
  • Wooden Chair: Allows you to fish for food while sailing.
  • Dinghy Ship Hangar: Used to build and deploy dinghies/submarines.
  • Ship Cargo Rack: While it slows down your ship, it greatly reduces the weight of items placed inside.

Customization

You can also add a personal touch to your ship by painting everything from the planks to the sails.

Frequently asked questions

First, you need to build a shipyard. You will need a land claim to place it down. Make sure the shipyard isn't too shallow, or your ship won't be able to leave once it's built. Next, craft the skeleton of your chosen ship. You can then add planks to complete the hull, followed by decks and sails. Finally, add a steering wheel and any internal structures, weapons, and furnishings.

You can build an Armoured Dock, which is a structure built in shallow water to dock your ship inside. It must be destroyed before your ship can be damaged.

It's a good idea to set a spawn point on your raft by putting a campfire and bed on it, so you can respawn there if you die. Wait until after Level 5 to depart, and make sure you have sufficient food and water to sustain you. Be careful not to engage or approach larger ships, as they might be pirates that will destroy your vessel.
