Raymond Anthony Townsend, born on December 20, 1955, in San Jose, California, became the first Filipino-American to play in the NBA. Townsend played three seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), with the Golden State Warriors and the Indiana Pacers.
Townsend played college basketball with the UCLA Bruins, earning all-conference honors in the Pacific-8 (later known as the Pac-12). He was a talented player, averaging close to 28 points per game during his senior year of high school. John Frederick "Jake" Townsend Sr., also known as "Houdini of the Hardwood" and "Johnny", was an American basketball forward and center. He played for Arsenal Technical High School in his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana, and led the team to the state finals in 1934, where they lost to Logansport. He was the leading scorer in the State Finals and was named All-State in basketball in Indiana twice, also winning the Dyer Medal, Indianapolis' top athletic award.
Townsend played collegiately for the University of Michigan from 1936 to 1938, where he was named an All-Big Ten player by both the United Press and the Associated Press for three consecutive years. He led Michigan in scoring each year from 1936 to 1938 and was considered the greatest Michigan basketball player before the Cazzie Russell era. In 1938, he became the fourth consensus All-American in the university's history. Aside from basketball, Townsend also competed in shot put and discus for Michigan, earning five varsity letters – three in basketball and two in track.
After graduating, Townsend played baseball in 1938 in the Bush-Feezle State League for the Indianapolis team. He then went on to play professional basketball for the Indianapolis Kautskys, Oshkosh All-Stars, and Rochester Royals.
