He didn't start playing basketball until he was 17 years old, and his talent was discovered by chance when a German tourist—a man named Joaquin who sold cars on the Canary Islands—noticed his impressive height and connected him with Raúl Rodriguez, the director of the CB Gran Canaria youth academy. After seeing a photo of Tavares, Rodriguez met with him in Cape Verde's capital city of Praia, where he had his first basketball training.
In 2009, Tavares played for CB Gran Canaria's junior team in the Liga EBA. He was loaned to UB La Palma of the LEB Oro for the 2011-12 season and returned to Gran Canaria to make his Liga ACB debut in 2013.
