John Emmett Brady's career as a basketball coach
John Emmett Brady, born on September 17, 1954, in McComb, Mississippi, is an American college basketball coach. He played varsity basketball and earned his BS from Belhaven College in 1976. He then received his master's in Education from Mississippi State University in 1977.
Brady started his coaching career in the high school ranks of Louisiana. In 1981, he was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class AAA "Coach of the Year". He then returned to MSU to serve as an assistant coach under Bob Boyd and Richard Williams for eight seasons. In 1992, he was named the head coach at Samford University, where he went 89-77 in six seasons.
In 1997, Brady replaced Dale Brown as the head coach of the LSU Tigers. When Brady joined, the team was under probation due to a recruiting scandal. Despite a rough start, the Tigers broke through in 2000, posting a 28-6 record and making it to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. In the 2005-06 season, the Tigers won their first SEC regular-season championship since 1985 and earned a #4 seed in the NCAA tournament. They went on to defeat Duke and Texas to make it to the Final Four, the fourth in LSU history. Despite this success, Brady was fired in the middle of his 11th season at LSU.
On March 18, 2008, Brady was hired as the head coach of the Arkansas State Red Wolves. During his eight seasons with the team, he won two division titles in the Sun Belt but was unable to reach the postseason. He resigned at the end of the 2015-16 season and became the LSU Tigers basketball color analyst starting in the 2017-2018 season.
