The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) was formed in 1970 by seven institutions: Delaware State University, Howard University, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, and South Carolina State College. In 1995 and 1997, respectively, Hampton University and Norfolk State University, two HBCUs in Virginia, joined the MEAC, bringing the total number of members to eleven. Winston-Salem State University joined the MEAC in 2007 but left in 2010, and North Carolina Central University rejoined the conference in the same year. Savannah State University was announced as the newest member of the MEAC in 2010, and Augusta University (then known as Georgia Regents University) became the MEAC's first associate member in 2014.
