Defeating Ohio State
On March 19, 2021, the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 75-72 in overtime. This was the first major upset of the first NCAA Tournament in two years, with the 15th-seeded Golden Eagles taking down the second-seeded Buckeyes.
Oral Roberts' victory was driven by the outstanding performances of their two stars, Kevin Obanor and guard Max Abmas. Obanor, who led the team with 30 points and 11 rebounds, kick-started the Golden Eagles in overtime with an early basket. Abmas, the nation's leading scorer, added 29 points, including a pure jumper from the right wing that extended their lead to 72-66 with 2:05 left in the game.
The Golden Eagles' victory was also due in part to their ability to force Ohio State into committing turnovers. While Ohio State outrebounded Oral Roberts 49-32, the Golden Eagles countered this by forcing 16 turnovers from the Buckeyes, compared to their six. Additionally, Oral Roberts' sharp-shooting ability, particularly from the three-point line, kept them in the game even when their offense struggled.
Ohio State, meanwhile, struggled with turnovers and stagnant offense. They turned the ball over seven times in the first 11 minutes of the second half, and their offense continued to look stagnant throughout the game. Despite a strong performance by E.J. Liddell, who led the Buckeyes with 23 points, and a late rally, they were unable to overcome Oral Roberts in overtime.
The win was a historic one for Oral Roberts, as they became just the ninth No. 15-seed to beat a No. 2-seed in the tournament's history. It was also their first NCAA Tournament win since 1974. For Ohio State, the loss ended their season with a record of 21-10 and dashed their hopes of a Final Four run.
