The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located at 1000 Hall of Fame Avenue in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Hall of Fame is named after Canadian-American physician James Naismith, who invented the sport in Springfield in 1891.
The Hall of Fame was established in 1959 by Lee Williams, a former athletic director at Colby College, but it did not have a physical location at the time. The first facility opened on February 17, 1968, less than a month after the National Basketball Association played its 18th All-Star Game. The building was located at Springfield College and, in 17 years, drew over 630,000 visitors.
Due to the popularity of the Hall of Fame, a new facility was constructed beside the Connecticut River in Springfield, opening on June 30, 1985. This second facility recognised women for the first time, inducting pioneers such as Senda Berenson Abbott, who introduced basketball to women at Smith College. The building's scenic location and modern architecture also contributed to a significant increase in visitors.
In 2002, the Hall of Fame moved again, this time just 100 yards south along Springfield's riverfront, into a $47 million facility designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates. The building features a metallic silver, basketball-shaped sphere flanked by two symmetrical rhombuses. The dome is illuminated at night and covers 80,000 square feet, including a Subway sandwich shop and an extensive gift shop.
