Basketball Wives is an American reality television series that follows the lives of women romantically linked to basketball players. The original series was filmed in Miami, Florida, and premiered on April 11, 2010. Due to its success, the show was followed by a spin-off, Basketball Wives LA, which premiered on August 29, 2011, and ran for five seasons. Shaunie O'Neal, the ex-wife of NBA player Shaquille O'Neal, is an executive producer on both the original series and Basketball Wives LA. Cast changes
The cast of Basketball Wives LA has undergone several changes throughout its run. The first season premiered on August 29, 2011, and featured Kimsha Artest, Gloria Govan and her sister Laura Govan, Jackie Christie, and Imani Showalter. Malaysia Pargo and Draya Michele joined the cast a month later, while Tanya Williams appeared but was quickly phased out of the show.
For the second season, which premiered on September 10, 2012, Imani Showalter quit the show and was replaced by Brooke Bailey. Adiz "Bambi" Benson, an associate of Malaysia Pargo, also appeared in a supporting role.
After the cancellation of the original Basketball Wives, Shaunie O'Neal announced that the cast of Basketball Wives LA would be reorganized for season three. New cast members included British Williams, Brandi Maxiell, and Sundy Carter, while Gloria and Laura Govan, and Brooke Bailey confirmed their exit.
Following the conclusion of the second season of Basketball Wives LA in December 2012, the show returned for its fifth season on August 19, 2013. Tasha Marbury, the wife of Stephon Marbury, joined the cast, while Royce, Jennifer, and Kesha were dropped from the series.
On March 27, 2017, VH1 announced that the show would be retooled, airing under its original moniker, Basketball Wives, with its setting relocated to Los Angeles. The sixth season premiered on April 17, 2017, and featured the return of Evelyn Lozada, Jackie Christie and Malaysia Pargo, along with Shaunie O'Neal and Tami Roman. All cast members returned for the eighth season, which premiered on June 19, 2019, with the addition of new cast member Feby Torres. Tami Roman and CeCe Gutierrez departed the show halfway through the season.
The eleventh season of Basketball Wives, which was announced on June 13, 2023, and is set to air in fall 2023, will feature new cast members Brittany Renner, Vanessa Rider, Jac'Eil Duckworth, and Clayanna Warthen, joining returning cast members Jackie Christie, Jennifer Williams, and Brooke Bailey, and guest star Shaunie Henderson.
