The 2024 Paris Olympics
The qualification system for the 3x3 basketball tournament at the Paris Olympics is as follows: sixteen teams per gender will participate in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT), with the three highest-placed NOCs for each gender receiving a quota place. Additionally, eight teams per gender will compete in the FIBA Universality-driven Olympic Qualifying Tournament (UOQT), with the highest-placed NOC in each gender from the 2023 Continental Cups receiving a quota spot. The host country of the Olympic Games, France, will also participate in the tournament if they have not already qualified.
The USA Basketball Committee has selected four former NCAA athletes to represent the first-ever US Olympic men's 3x3 basketball team. The team is led by head coach Joe Lewandowski, who has earned seven gold medals, five silver medals, and one bronze medal across different men's and women's events. The players include Dylan Travis, who played college basketball at Midland, Iowa Central, and Florida Southern, and Maddox, who played at Princeton.
The US women's 3x3 basketball team is also expected to be a strong contender, with Dearica Hamby and Rhyne Howard, both current WNBA players, on the squad. Hamby is having a career year in her 10th WNBA season, while Howard was drafted No. 1 overall by the Atlanta Dream in 2022 and has been an All-Star selection in her first two seasons.
The 3x3 basketball competition at the Paris Olympics is expected to be a huge success, with fans, media, and organisations like FIBA highlighting its "explosive" growth and engagement.

Team USA
The United States has traditionally dominated 5-on-5 basketball at the Olympics, but the 3x3 variant was only introduced at the Summer Olympic Games in 2020. The Tokyo Games in 2021 produced mixed results for Team USA: the women won gold, but the men's team didn't even qualify.
For the Tokyo Olympics, the basketball program was expanded to include 3x3 for the first time, though the event was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The US women's team was impacted by the virus, with Katie Lou Samuelson testing positive and having to be replaced by Jackie Young. The US women's team, which included WNBA stars Stefanie Dolson, Allisha Gray, and Kelsey Plum, only lost one game during pool play before defeating France in the semifinals and then the ROC in the gold-medal game.
The men's team for the 2024 Paris Olympics includes Jimmer Fredette, Dylan Travis, Kareem Maddox, and Canyon Barry. This team has already proven their mettle by winning their first tournament together, the 2022 FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup. The four players represent BYU, Florida, Princeton, and Florida Southern, and the team is led by head coach Joe Lewandowski, who has been involved in the USA 3x3 program since 2012, earning several medals across men's and women's different age-grouped events.
The women's team includes Howard, who was a replacement for the injured Cameron Brink. She was drafted No. 1 overall by the WNBA's Atlanta Dream in 2022 and has been an All-Star selection in each of her first two seasons. Another member is 22-year-old Van Lith, who will be the first American since 1988 to play basketball at the Olympics during their NCAA career.
