A badminton match consists of the best of three games to 21 points, with a point awarded to the winner of each rally. Games must be won by two clear points, and if the score reaches 29-29, a sudden death point is played to determine the winner. There are five types of badminton games: men's singles, men's doubles, mixed doubles, women's singles, and women's doubles. In singles, there is one player on each side, and in doubles, there are two players on each side. The court is rectangular and divided into halves by a net, with the doubles court being wider than the singles court.
To start a rally, a player must hit the shuttlecock upwards so that it passes over the net and lands in the receiver's service court. There can only be one stroke over the net, and the shuttlecock must not be struck again before it crosses to the other side. If the shuttlecock hits the net but still goes over and lands past the service line, the server wins the rally. If it hits the net and lands short or wide, the receiver wins the point. If the shuttlecock hits the ceiling or any other fixtures above the court, it is usually considered a fault, but this can be determined by the tournament director or agreed upon by the players beforehand.
During service, the server must hit the shuttlecock diagonally to the opponent's half court and over their front service line. The serve must be hit underarm, with the shuttlecock below the server's waist, and both feet in contact with the floor. In doubles, the receiver's partner is not allowed to hit the second shot in the rally.
