The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men's basketball tournament is a single-elimination tournament for men's college basketball teams in the United States. It has been held annually since 1939, except for 2020 when it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament has 68 teams and determines the champion of Division I, the top level of play in the NCAA. While several players have won four basketball championships, only one college basketball team has won both the NCAA Tournament and the NIT Tournament: the 1949-50 CCNY team.

John Wooden, UCLA's coach, has the most NCAA titles
John Robert Wooden, nicknamed "the Wizard of Westwood", is the greatest basketball coach of all time. He won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period as head coach for the UCLA Bruins, including a record-breaking seven in a row. No other team has won more than four in a row in Division I college men's or women's basketball. Wooden's UCLA team also won an NCAA men's basketball record of 88 consecutive games.
Wooden's first official coaching role was at Dayton High School in Kentucky, where he spent two years leading "The Green Devils". He then moved back to Indiana, where he coached at South Bend Central High School for nine seasons. Although he had no national championship wins during this time, his record was still impressive, with 218 wins and 42 losses. After serving in WWII as a Navy Lieutenant, he returned to coaching at Indiana State Teachers College (later renamed Indiana State University). The team won the Indiana Collegiate Conference Title in both years he was head coach, with a record of 44-15.
Wooden took over as head coach of the UCLA Bruins in 1955, and by the 1955-56 season, he had already led the team to its first undefeated PCC conference title and a 17-game winning streak. However, they were unable to advance to the NCAA Tournament in the following seasons due to the success of the California Golden Bears and a probation imposed on all UCLA sports teams after a scandal involving illegal payments to players on the school's football team.
Despite these setbacks, Wooden went on to achieve unprecedented success with the UCLA Bruins, winning ten national championships and a 620-147 record during his 27 seasons with the program. He was named NCAA College Basketball Coach of the Year six times and received numerous other awards and honours, including the Reagan Distinguished American Award in 1995 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003. He was also the first person honoured in the Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach.
