The sports centre first opened to the public in 1995, after the 6th National Games in 1987, where new venues and stadiums were added, including a baseball field, tennis court, bowling venue, croquet field, indoor kart field, outdoor swimming pool, and gym. The Tianhe Stadium was constructed at the former site of the Guangzhou Tianhe Airport and was opened in August 1987.
