The objective of the game is to shoot a ball through a metal hoop, or basket, suspended above the ground. Basic Gameplay
- Each team can have a maximum of five players on the court.
- The team with the basketball is on offense.
- The player with the ball must bounce, or dribble, the ball with one hand while moving both feet. If both hands touch the ball or the player stops dribbling, they can only move one foot, which is called the pivot foot.
- Players can only dribble once and cannot start another dribble after stopping. If a player starts dribbling again, it is called a double dribble, and the ball is turned over to the other team.
- The ball must stay in bounds. If the offensive team loses the ball out of bounds, the other team gains possession.
- Once the offensive team crosses half-court, they cannot go back into the backcourt. This is called a backcourt violation.
- The players' hands must be on top of the ball while dribbling. Touching the bottom of the ball while dribbling is called carrying the ball, resulting in a turnover.
- Players may only advance the ball by dribbling or passing. Running with the ball without dribbling is called traveling and results in a turnover.
- The offense has five seconds to inbound the ball after scoring a basket.
- A basket made within the three-point line is worth two points, and a basket made from outside the three-point line is worth three points.
- Free throws are worth one point each.
Fouls and Violations
- Fouls are acts of illegal contact or physical obstruction that impede an opposing player's gameplay.
- Defensive players must not foul offensive players in a way that causes them to lose the ball or miss a shot.
- Players cannot kick the ball or hit it with their fists.
- No player can touch the ball while it is traveling downward towards the basket or if it is on the rim (goaltending).
