The NBA's first Black player was Nathaniel "Sweetwater" Clifton, who was born in England, Arkansas, on October 13, 1922. As a child, he moved with his family to Chicago, Illinois, where he became a star basketball and baseball player at DuSable High School. In 1942, he joined the Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans and later served in the United States Army for three years, fighting in World War II and rising to the rank of sergeant.
