Basketball is a team sport that was invented in 1891 by Dr James Naismith, a Canadian physical instructor working at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. The objective of the game is for two teams of five players each to score points by putting the ball inside a hoop (also called a basket) that is elevated 10 feet above the ground. Points can be accumulated by making field goals (two or three points) or free throws (one point). The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, the game goes into overtime.
