The arena is a mammoth octagonal structure situated just northwest of the Tennessee River and southwest of Neyland Stadium. Its exterior design echoes the brick-and-mortar pattern of the iconic Ayres Hall, with the familiar orange-and-white checkerboard pattern adorning the baselines of the court. At one point, Thompson-Boling Arena boasted the largest seating capacity of any facility specifically built for basketball in the United States. The first phase of renovations was completed in October 2007, with the University of Tennessee Men's Basketball team achieving an impressive 16-0 record at the arena during the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 seasons.
