The North Central Conference (NCC), also known as the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, was a college athletic conference that operated in the north-central United States. It was formed in 1922 with nine charter members: the College of St. Thomas, Creighton University, Des Moines University, Morningside College, Nebraska Wesleyan University, North Dakota Agricultural College, the University of North Dakota, South Dakota State College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts, and the University of South Dakota. The team was owned by businessman Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco, Jr., founder and owner of Northern Cement Corporation, through his company. In 1980, Cojuangco was appointed by Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos to become the project director for basketball in the country. Cojuangco was tasked with setting up, financing, and developing the national basketball team to represent the Philippines internationally.
The best players in the Philippines at the time were playing in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), the country's first professional basketball league. However, the Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur ruled that only amateur players would be allowed to participate in national basketball team tournaments.
