After a 7–8 overall mark and 3–5 conference record in their first season in the SoCon, VMI finished in 20th place or lower in the conference four of the next six seasons. Raftery departed in 1934 with a 68–112 record, and the team never placed better than 5th in the conference over the next 30 years.
In 1975–76, the Keydets went 22–10, which included a 9–3 SoCon record. This was the school's first winning record in conference play since 1968 and only their second since 1943. After winning the SoCon tournament, VMI defeated Tennessee 81–75 and DePaul 71–66 in overtime, before falling to Rutgers 91–75. The team was led by Ron Carter, who was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers as the 26th overall pick in the 1978 NBA draft. The Keydets made their second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance the following year, in 1977, which was also their most recent appearance.
In 2008–09, VMI reached the championship again but fell to Radford 108–94. The Keydets made their first postseason tournament in 37 years in 2013–14, accepting an invitation to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. VMI's other sports teams
The VMI Keydets are the athletic teams that represent the Virginia Military Institute. They participate in NCAA Division I and are members of the Southern Conference (SoCon), Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), or America East Conference, depending on the sport.
VMI sponsors teams in sixteen different sports, with eleven men's teams and seven women's teams. The men's teams include baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, wrestling, swimming and diving, rifle, and boxing. The women's teams include lacrosse, swimming and diving, and water polo.
