The University of Tennessee at Martin (UT Martin or UTM) is a public university located in Martin, Tennessee, in the southern United States. It is one of five campuses that make up the University of Tennessee system and is the only public university in West Tennessee outside of Memphis.
UT Martin has a rich history that dates back to 1927, but its story begins even earlier, in 1900. That year, Ada Gardner Brooks donated land on the outskirts of Martin to the Tennessee Baptist Convention for educational purposes. The school that opened was called the Hall-Moody Institute, named after two local Baptist ministers, John Newton Hall and Joseph Burnley Moody. The institute offered 13 years of study, from elementary grades to the early years of college.
In the late 1920s, the Hall-Moody Institute faced closure, prompting local leaders to appeal to the state of Tennessee to intervene. The new college began operations on September 2, 1927, with 120 students.
