Schools that did not meet these criteria were relegated to Division I-AA. Initially, 79 out of 144 schools qualified for I-A, while 65 were placed in I-AA. However, due to the four-year grace period allowed for schools to meet the criteria, only eight schools opted for Division I-AA for the 1978 season.
Over time, the number of teams in Division I-AA grew, with membership peaking at 130 in 2022 before settling at 129. Prior to the 2006 season, NCAA Division I-A and NCAA Division I-AA were renamed as NCAA Division I FBS and NCAA Division I FCS, respectively.
