Wofford Terriers basketball history
The Wofford Terriers are the athletic teams that represent Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The men's basketball team has been playing Division I basketball in the Southern Conference since the 1997–98 season. Prior to the 1995–96 season, the Terriers played in Division II in all sports, and until the 1988–89 period, Wofford's athletic teams were members of the NAIA.
The first basketball teams at Wofford College started in the early 1900s, with class teams and a varsity team. The first recorded game was a 1906 win over Wake Forest. The basketball teams moved to the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for the 2017–18 season, replacing the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
The Terriers have appeared six times in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, most recently in 2025. They have won four regular-season SoCon titles and five SoCon tournament championships and are one-time SoCon tournament runners-up. In 2013, Wofford won the Southern Conference tournament and qualified for the NCAA tournament for the third time in five years. They also qualified for the 2015 NCAA tournament, going 28–6. In February 2016, Wofford set an NCAA record by hitting 17 of 21 shots from the three-point line against VMI. During the 2018–19 season, Wofford was nationally ranked for the first time in school history, finishing with a 30–5 record. They also defeated the defending national champion, North Carolina, in Chapel Hill, which was the first Wofford win against a ranked opponent and the first win against a top-five opponent in school history.
The women's basketball team played its first tournament in 1980–81, defeating Alabama and Virginia, among others.

Wofford College's basketball teams play in the Southern Conference. The college's basketball stadium is the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, which opened in 2017 and was donated by Richardson. The facility contains a basketball arena with a capacity of up to 3,400 spectators, as well as a volleyball arena that seats up to 350 people. In addition to basketball, the stadium also hosts lacrosse and volleyball games.
The Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium is located across the street from Cumming Street School, which was built in 1926 as the first modern high school for Black students in Spartanburg County. The school building is described as being constructed of "painted cement blocks", a less expensive material than the brick used in contemporary schools for white children. Today, portions of the Cumming Street School are used for storage and as the headquarters of the college's Facilities Department.
The stadium's opening was made possible by a $150 million gift from Jerry Richardson in 2021. This donation is being used to support building maintenance, raise the minimum compensation pool on campus, and provide need-based scholarships and experiential learning opportunities.
