The Saint Peter's men's basketball team first gained national recognition in 1968. Led by head coach Don Kennedy, the Peacocks defeated the Duke Blue Devils (ranked No. 10 nationally) in the 1968 NIT Quarterfinals. The final score was 100–71, and the game was played in front of a sold-out crowd of 19,500 at Madison Square Garden. This was the first sell-out for a college basketball game at Madison Square Garden.
