What You'll Learn

May Day Challenge Basketball: Rules
The following rules are for the May Day Challenge Basketball tournament. The rules are adapted from the official NBA rulebook, with some modifications to facilitate an enjoyable and competitive tournament for all participants.
Registration and Payment
Registration and payment must be completed online at least 7 days before the start of the tournament. This is a grassroots basketball tournament, and we will be using gyms/facilities typically within 25 minutes of the nearest airport. Games will span across multiple venues, and all games within a day will be held at the same venue.
Ball Size
- Grades 1st–6th boys: Intermediate basketball (Size: 28.5)
- Grades 7th–High School Boys: Regulation basketball (Size: 29.5)
- Girls/Women's divisions: Intermediate basketball (Size: 28.5)
- 1st & 2nd Grade levels (boys and girls): "Junior" or "mini" ball (Size: 27) can be used if both coaches agree.
Coach's Challenge
Each team is entitled to one challenge per game. If the first challenge is successful, the team will be awarded a second challenge. A team may utilize a challenge to trigger an instant replay review of only the following three events:
- A called goaltending or basket interference violation.
- A called personal foul charged to its own team.
- Any other event deemed challengeable by the on-court game officials.
It is important to note that in the last two minutes of the fourth period and the last two minutes of any overtime, only on-court game officials can trigger a review, and teams are no longer able to utilize their challenges.
Instant Replay Review
If an instant replay review is triggered by a challenge, the designated Replay Official will review the video to evaluate whether the call on the floor was correct. The Replay Official may also review the video to determine other matters, such as whether a boundary line violation occurred or if an 8-second backcourt violation occurred before the ball left the shooter's hand.
Non-Challengeable Events
The following events are not challengeable and cannot be reviewed through a coach's challenge:
- A called personal foul charged to the opposing team.
- Continuation, such as whether a defensive foul occurred prior to the offensive player's shooting motion.
- Violations such as traveling, carrying, double dribble, flopping, or offensive/defensive three-seconds.
Game Times
Games typically start at 8:00 am, and the final games finish by 7:00 pm on the last day of the tournament. During the summer, games may start later in the evening. The number of games will depend on the specific event and will be posted on the tournament app/website.
We hope that these rules provide a clear framework for the May Day Challenge Basketball tournament. Any further questions about rules or interpretations can be directed to the tournament organizers, and we wish all participants the best of luck!
