The Seton Hall Pirates are the NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's basketball program of Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. However, in 1961, a point-shaving scandal marred the program. The Pirates rebounded and returned to the NIT in 1974 under coach Bill Raftery. Seton Hall became a charter member of the Big East Conference in 1979.
J. Carlesimo was hired in 1982, and by 1989, he had led the Pirates to their first NCAA tournament appearance and an unexpected run to the NCAA Championship game, where they were defeated by Michigan in overtime. The team continued to find success in the early 1990s, with Big East tournament and regular-season championships, as well as appearances in the Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen.
After a period of struggling to maintain a winning record, the Pirates broke through in the 2015–16 season under coach Kevin Willard, winning the Big East tournament Championship and securing their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2006.
