The company's history
MasterCraft was founded in 1968 by Rob Shirley, a young waterskiing instructor who opened a waterskiing school in Florida in 1965. In 1968, with the help of a few fellow waterskiers, he modified a Ski Nautique boat manufactured by Correct Craft. The boat was completed in August and debuted at the U.S. Nationals in Canton, Ohio. However, Rob was forced to close the waterskiing school and moved to his wife's parents' farm in Maryville, Tennessee, where he founded the MasterCraft Boat Company, which initially operated out of a two-horse barn.
During its first year, MasterCraft only built 12 boats using the modified hull design. However, the boat design was so revolutionary that they soon started receiving orders, quickly rising as the best ski boat on the market. In 1972, MasterCraft pulled its first National Championship. In 1973, it pulled Kris LaPoint to its first slalom world record, and in 1976, it pulled new world records in men's slalom and tricks. In 1976, MasterCraft also pioneered the swim platform to make getting in and out of the boat easier and more comfortable. In 1977, MasterCraft pulled its first world championship.
In 1980, MasterCraft introduced the optional PowerSlot 1.5:1 gear reduction transmission for increased acceleration. In 1983, it introduced composite stringers and founded the Pro Tour. In 1989, MasterCraft introduced its patented WearGuard pylon, which featured a plastic insert at the tow point to reduce rope wear. In 1992, MasterCraft brought the first fuel-injected ski boat to the market with the Corvette LT1 engine marinized by Indmar. In 1993, the company's headquarters was relocated to Vonore, Tennessee.
In 1994, MasterCraft introduced the first adjustable driver's helm seat in the industry. It also perfected the V-drive ski boat, offering true inboard skiability and performance with a roomy, wide-open interior. In 1998, MasterCraft introduced the MasterCraft Oscillation Dampering System (M.O.D.S.), which used aerospace materials and a unique structural configuration to reduce vibration and noise.
In 2000, MasterCraft introduced the Keel line Gravity Ballast (KGB) system, which creates a low center of gravity for better handling and maneuverability. In 2001, it won Powerboat's Towboat of the Year Award. In 2002, MasterCraft introduced the ProStar 197/X-7 and won Powerboat's Outstanding Towboat Performance Award. In 2004, the MasterCraft MariStar 280 VLD won Boating Magazine's Boat of the Year Award. In 2006, MasterCraft produced over 3,000 boats per year, sold in 25 different countries by over 100 domestic and international dealers.
In 2007, the company was acquired by two private equity firms: Charlesbank Capital Partners and Transportation Resource Partners. In 2010, the company was recapitalized by Wayzata Investment Partners. In May 2015, MasterCraft filed for an IPO to raise $100 million, and on July 17, 2015, it commenced trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market as MCFT. Today, MasterCraft has over 1,000 engineers and produces thousands of surf, wakeboard, and tournament ski boats each year from its headquarters in Vonore, Tennessee.
