FDU Knights: the men's basketball team
The Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights, or FDU Knights, is the men's basketball team of Fairleigh Dickinson University. The team first took to the court on December 5, 1949, and has since built a legacy based on integrity, pride, resilience, respect, and unity. Over 75 seasons, the Knights have had nine head coaches and have achieved more than 1,000 victories.
The original squad of 14 players included FDU great George Glasgow and was led by head coach Richard "Dick" Holub. In 1956, the Knights appeared on television for the first time. In 1966, Jack Devine took over coaching duties from Holub, becoming the second coach in the team's history. Devine was followed by Al LoBalbo in 1969, who coached the Knights for 11 seasons. During the 1970-71 season, the Knights played at Madison Square Garden for the first time, defeating Dartmouth 53-48. In that same year, Coach LoBalbo's Knights were ranked No. 1 nationally in defence.
The FDU Knights have appeared in several tournaments, including one NCAA Division II men's basketball tournament, two NAIA tournaments, and two National Invitation Tournaments (NIT). While their record in the NCAA and NIT tournaments has been less impressive, they have had some notable successes. Three former players have been selected in the NBA draft, including Marcus Gaither and Ken Webb, and several have gone on to play internationally.
In 2023, the Knights made history by defeating the No.1 seed, Purdue University, in the first round of the NCAA tournament, considered the greatest upset in college basketball. That same year, assistant coach Jack Castleberry was promoted to head coach, and the Knights signed a multi-game broadcast agreement with the YES Network, airing eight games live during the 2023-24 season.

NCAA Division I and Division III sports teams
NCAA Division I (D1) is the highest level of college sports competition in the United States. It includes many of the largest and most well-known universities and athletic programs. There are 352 Division 1 schools across the U.S., and Division 1 schools have the largest athletic budgets and provide more scholarships compared to the other division levels. Being a Division 1 athlete requires a lot of training and practice, and student-athletes may feel separated from their classmates due to the heavy training schedule.
The Fairleigh Dickinson Knights men's basketball team is a Division II team, having appeared in one NCAA Division II men's basketball tournament. However, it is worth noting that the Knights have appeared in two National Invitation Tournaments (NIT), which are not specific to any division.
NCAA Division III (D-III) is the NCAA's largest division, with around 450 member institutions, 80% of which are private and 20% public. D-III institutions must sponsor at least three team sports for each gender, with each playing season represented by both genders. Football and basketball cannot be Division I programs at Division III institutions, as their revenue-enhancing potential would give them an unfair advantage over other D-III schools. Ten D-III schools currently field Division I programs in one or two sports, with a maximum of one sport per gender. These schools are allowed to offer athletic scholarships only for their Division I men's and women's sports.
