From 1919 to 1990, the Cornell Big Red men's basketball team called Barton Hall home. The on-campus field house, located in Ithaca, New York, was originally referred to as the "New Armory" when it was completed in 1919, in contrast to the Old Armory, which was located on the Engineering Quadrangle and has since been demolished. The building was renamed in January 1940 to honour Colonel Frank A. Barton, a Cornell alumnus who was one of the first two students from the university to receive an army commission and served as the first ROTC commandant from 1904 to 1908. During World War I, Barton Hall served as an airplane hangar, and during World War II, it served the ROTC as an armory.
Barton Hall is a notable structure designed by the official State Architect of New York, Lewis Pilcher. It was constructed to provide military instruction to Cornell students, a requirement due to the university's status as a land-grant institution. The building boasts an impressive interior space of almost 2 acres (8,100 square metres) and was once the largest unpillared room in existence. Its drill shed offered an expansive 362 by 228 feet of open floor space, capable of accommodating up to 1,000 men. The architecture features local limestone and double trusses spaced 40 feet apart to support the roof. The Architectural Record praised the hall as a "notably modern achievement in American architecture."
In addition to its military functions, Barton Hall served as the primary venue for Cornell students to register for classes before the advent of online course registration. Students would gather in the hall at the start of each semester, placing punched cards into bins for each class positioned on tables throughout the spacious hall.
After seven decades as the home of Cornell Basketball, Barton Hall underwent a significant change in 1990 when the new field house, Bartels Hall, was completed. Cornell Basketball moved to their current home, Newman Arena in Bartels Hall, in January 1990. Barton Hall continues to be a versatile space, housing an indoor track, basketball courts, libraries, and museums. The current head coach of Cornell's men's basketball team is Jon Jaques, a former player and alumnus of the university. Jaques was born and raised in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California, and played basketball for Cornell's Big Red men's basketball team for four seasons, three of which were with Ivy League Championship teams. In the 2009-10 season, he was a team tri-captain and played in 31 games, leading the league in three-point percentage at 47.2%. After graduating, Jaques played professionally for Ironi Ashkelon in Israel.
Jaques began his coaching career in 2011 as an assistant basketball coach at the Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. The following year, he joined the Columbia University Lions men's basketball team as a graduate manager while also pursuing graduate studies.
