Baylor and Southern California were the last undefeated college basketball teams in 2022 until they lost on the same day
Baylor and Southern California were the last undefeated college basketball teams in the 2021-22 season until they both lost for the first time on the same day, January 11, 2022. Baylor lost at home to Texas Tech 65-62, despite leading by 15 in the first half. The team had looked imposing all season, beating Stanford by 38 and then-No. 6 Villanova by 19, as well as winning a strong tournament in the Bahamas. Their loss came as a shock as Baylor was an 11-point favourite and the defending national champion.
Southern California, the other undefeated team, lost to their Pac-12 rival, Stanford, 75-69. USC had started the season unranked but had risen through the ranks as they continued to win. Their unbeaten record was partly due to three conference games being cancelled or postponed over the holidays due to COVID-19 issues.
The losses by Baylor and Southern California meant that the Indiana team from 1975-76 retained its distinction as the last undefeated national champion. In the 2021-22 season, Colorado State had also dropped from the undefeated ranks on January 8, before Baylor and Southern California suffered their first losses.

Baylor's men's basketball program was plagued by scandal in 2003
In 2003, Baylor University's men's basketball program was plagued by scandal. The controversy began with the murder of Patrick Dennehy, a junior forward on the team, by his teammate Carlton Dotson on June 12, 2003. This tragic event set off a chain of investigations that revealed numerous infractions within the basketball program.
Dennehy had transferred to Baylor from the University of New Mexico after his sophomore season in 2001-2002. In the summer of 2003, he and Dotson expressed concerns about their safety. After they missed a party, Dennehy's family and roommate became worried as they had not heard from him, and his dog had not been fed. This sparked initial concerns and investigations.
The scandal also brought to light allegations regarding Dennehy's ability to remain on the Baylor basketball team without an athletic scholarship during the 2002-2003 academic year. This led to allegations of impropriety within the university's athletic department. As a result, Baylor's basketball program faced severe consequences and was left in disarray.
The university took prompt action, placing itself on two years of probation and withdrawing from the 2003-2004 Big 12 Conference tournament, removing itself from postseason contention. The scandal resulted in sanctions and a tarnished reputation for the basketball program, which was detailed in the 2017 Showtime documentary "Disgraced."
Despite this low point in 2003, the Baylor men's basketball team has since achieved notable successes, such as representing Team USA at the FISU World University Games in 2025, where they finished undefeated in pool play with a perfect 3-0 record.

Baylor's basketball team was involved in a fatal bus accident in 1927
On January 22, 1927, Coach Ralph Wolf's Baylor basketball team was involved in a fatal bus accident. The team was travelling from Waco's Baylor University to the University of Texas at Austin for a basketball game. As the bus passed through Round Rock, Texas, it approached railroad tracks on the south side of the business district on a drizzly, cloudy day.
As the bus crossed the tracks, the occupants failed to hear the sound of the train whistle and ringing bell. The driver caught sight of the train at the last moment and tried to steer away, but the Sunshine Special crashed into the bus at nearly 60 mph, tearing off the roof and right side. Ten Baylor students and basketball players were killed by the impact. The incident is remembered as the "Immortal Ten" tragedy, a term coined by Waco Times-Herald reporter Jack Hawkins.
One player, James Clyde "Abe" Kelly, pushed his friend, Weir Washam, out of the window of the bus just moments before the impact, saving Washam's life but costing Kelly his own. The bodies of Kelly and Robert Hailey, a sophomore guard, were found stretched across the cowcatcher on the front of the train, with their arms locked around each other, and Kelly missing a leg.
A memorial service was held at Baylor University, drawing over 3,000 attendees. Local businesses closed, and the city's telephone system shut down for the hour of the service. Individual memorials exist for each of the deceased, but the group is collectively remembered as the Immortal Ten. Today, Baylor holds an annual memorial ceremony during homecoming activities, where freshmen are told the story of the 1927 bus crash and the Immortal Ten.
