Cavaliers basketball history
The Cavaliers or the Cleveland Cavaliers is an American professional basketball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. They compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the Central Division of the Eastern Conference. The Cavaliers began playing in 1970 as an expansion team, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Buffalo Braves. Their home games were initially held at the Cleveland Arena from 1970 to 1974, then at the Richfield Coliseum from 1974 to 1994. Since 1994, the Cavaliers have played their home games at Rocket Arena (formerly known as Gund Arena) in downtown Cleveland, which they share with the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League.
The Cavaliers' original jersey colours were wine and gold, with the first jerseys featuring a feathered "C" in "Cavaliers". In 1974, the jerseys changed to a block lettering and checkerboard pattern, which became synonymous with the "Miracle of Richfield" team of 1976. The shade of gold was also changed from yellow to metallic, and the uniforms were updated to include stripes above "Cavaliers" and below the uniform number. Over the years, the Cavaliers have continued to make changes to their uniforms and logos, including updates to the colour scheme and design.
The Cavaliers had a challenging start to their inaugural season, losing their first 15 games and struggling in their early years. However, they showed improvement in the early 1970s and during the 1975-76 season, coached by Bill Fitch, the team secured their first division championship with a 49-33 record. This was also the first winning season and playoff appearance in the Cavaliers' history, where they advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals. The Cavaliers' "Miracle" season was followed by two more successful campaigns that led to playoff berths, although they were eliminated in the first round on both occasions.
The Cavaliers have had notable players such as Austin Carr, who was their first star player, drafted in 1971. In the 2015-16 season, the Cavaliers, led by Kyrie Irving and LeBron James, clinched the top seed in the Eastern Conference and went on to win their first NBA championship in franchise history, defeating the Golden State Warriors. This was a historic comeback as the Cavaliers had been down three games to one before Irving and James led the team to three straight wins while facing elimination. The Cavaliers won their second Central Division title in the 2021-22 season, marking their first postseason play since 2017-18 and the first time a non-LeBron-led team had qualified since 1997-98.
