The 1951-52 season was the 33rd season that Phog Allen coached the Jayhawks. The 1988 tournament involved 64 schools playing in a single-elimination format to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. The tournament began on March 17, 1988, and the championship game was held on April 4, returning to Kansas City for the 10th time. In overtime, Brandon Rush, Darrell Arthur, and Darnell Jackson each made a basket to give Kansas a 69-63 lead. Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 5 points to cut the Kansas lead to 71-68 with one minute remaining. Mario Chalmers and Sherron Collins each made a pair of free throws to give Kansas a 75-68 overtime victory and their first national championship since 1988.
