Kansas's victory in the 1988 NCAA tournament was particularly remarkable given the team's performance earlier in the season. The Jayhawks had a modest start to the season, accruing 11 losses, the most ever for a national champion. They also suffered three home losses, including one to rival Kansas State that snapped their 55-game homecourt winning streak in Allen Fieldhouse. However, behind the high-scoring of senior forward Danny Manning, who led the tournament in scoring, Kansas gained momentum in the tournament, facing lower seeds in the early rounds.
In the Elite 8, Kansas avenged their earlier loss to Kansas State, defeating their rivals and advancing to the Final 4. There, they faced another team that had handed them a home loss earlier in the season, Duke, and emerged victorious. In the final game, Kansas faced their third opponent of the season that had defeated them at home, Oklahoma, who was coached by Billy Tubbs. Despite being considered a long shot, Kansas pulled off an upset, defeating the top-rated Sooners 83-79. Manning, who scored 31 points in the championship game, was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
The 1988 Kansas team was subsequently remembered as "Danny and the Miracles" following their impressive tournament run, which included defeating three teams that had handed them home losses earlier in the season and pulling off the third-biggest point-spread upset in Championship Game history.
