The FIBA Basketball World Cup is the most prestigious and high-profile international men's basketball competition globally. The first-ever FIBA Basketball World Cup took place in Argentina in 1950, with the host nation prevailing in the Final against the USA. Host country
The host country of the Olympic Games is always allocated a quota place for each gender. The FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournaments consisted of two rounds: the Pre-Qualifying Tournaments (FOPQTs) and the Qualifying Tournaments (FOQTs). The FOPQTs were played at the continental level, and the FOQTs were played at the global level. A total of 40 teams competed in the FOPQTs, comprising 28 teams that played in the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers but did not qualify, and the 12 highest-ranked teams from the first round of the Qualifiers. For each continent, teams were selected based on their performance in the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification, or by certain qualification or ranking criteria for those that did not play in the second round.
From the Africa, Americas, and Asia tournaments, the winners advanced to the FOQTs, while two teams from the European FOPQTs also clinched their spot at the FOQTs. Twenty-four teams participated in four tournaments, with the winners earning the last four berths at the Olympics. Along with the five teams that advanced from the FOPQTs, 19 teams were selected based on their performance at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. These included the highest-ranked teams from Africa, the Americas, and Asia/Oceania at the World Cup, apart from direct qualifiers.

Group stages
