Mysterio and Guerrero's friendship soon began to show cracks, with Guerrero's nephew, Chavo Guerrero, playing both sides and planting seeds of distrust. During a match at WrestleMania 21, Mysterio defeated Guerrero, marking Guerrero's third singles loss to Mysterio. After the match, Guerrero shook Mysterio's hand in a show of respect, but his frustration was clear. Guerrero's frustration continued to grow as both wrestlers interfered in each other's matches, causing DQ endings.
The rivalry between Mysterio and Guerrero came to an end on September 1, 2005, when Guerrero gave a promo for their upcoming cage match, admitting that his own hubris had led to his defeats.
